REPAIR VS. REPLACEMENT
When a stone chip can be repaired by Southbank, it avoids the much higher cost of a future replacement when the damage
spreads. That’s why most insurance companies would prefer to fix your windshield at no cost today, and avoid paying a much
higher claim if the damage is left unattended.
How large is the damage?
If the damage is smaller than a loonie (26.5mm) it can be repaired quickly and easily. If the stone chip is larger than a loonie, the windshield needs to be replaced as the structural integrity of the windshield can be compromised.
Does the damage affect your sight line?
Have a look at where the damage is located. Imagine a 30cm strip from your steering wheel to the top of the windshield. If the stone chip falls in that area, the windshield needs to be replaced. Law prohibits repair of a windshield where the driver’s view can be affected.
Where is the damage?
In order to be properly repaired, the damage should not fall within 5cm of the edge of your windshield. This can cause problems with the repair and affect your warranty should an issue arise.
